Studies on volleyball injury incidence during training and match play, however, have mainly been retrospective, and reliable information from season-long prospective studies is scarce. 2, 5, 6, 8– 12 From these previous studies on volleyball injuries it is known that ankle sprains account for up to half of all acute injuries, with an estimate of one sprain per 1000 playing hours. Consequently, preventive strategies should focus mainly on this injury type.
The purpose of the study was to examine the incidence and mechanisms of acute volleyball injuries, with particular reference to possible risk factors for ankle injuries. Coaches and players in the top two divisions of the Norwegian Volleyball Federation were asked to keep records of exposure time and all acute volleyball injuries causing a player to miss at least one playing day during one season.

Although volleyball accounts for just a small percentage of all organized sports injuries, participation in the sport is on the rise, and with that comes more potential for injury. Because volleyball players repeatedly use their shoulders for spiking and blocking, overuse injuries of the shoulder are common.
For instance, Hall and colleagues showed that the risk of developing anterior knee pain was four times higher among “early specialized” female basketball, soccer and volleyball players. 12 However, despite the Hall study, little is known about the long-term effects of antecedent sport participation from an epidemiological perspective.
